This still reminds me that I forgot to mention in my own blog about how The History of Violence has the most creative use of coffee since Fritz Lang's The Big Heat!

I just read your comments today and I completely understand your reaction. I don't know why the political angle was the one that stuck way out for me--there is a lot of other stuff going on in the movie--but it did.

adding ... you now also have me thinking of how both Lang & Cronenberg show you the innocent coffee pot a few times beforehand. Reminds me of Chekhov's dictum that if you show a gun in Act I it has to go off by Act III. I've spent years applying that to guns, now I will have to apply it to coffee pots too.

and now you have me thinking of coffee scenes, and I swear I could come up with a half-dozen at least ...

Well, you'd have to bring David Lynch into the discussion at some point. Remember how every second scene in Twin Peaks featured coffee in some form or other?
